Pune is seeing a rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome cases, prompting health officials to advise residents to stay cautious and follow safety measures
To tackle this, they’ve set aside 15 ICU beds at Kamla Nehru Hospital specifically for GBS patients, and the best part? Treatment is free for those who qualify under the Urban Poor Scheme. Dr. Bhonsle mentioned they’ve even bought 200 immunoglobulin injections to help cut down costs for private hospitals treating these patients.
The PMC is also looking out for those who might struggle to pay for treatment. They’re making sure that low-income patients get the help they need. Plus, they’re keeping a close eye on private hospitals to ensure everyone gets the support they deserve.
As for safety, the municipal commissioner has said there’s no sign of any GBS-causing germs in the water samples tested so far. Still, it’s a good idea to stick to boiled water for now. Dr. Bhonsle reassured everyone that there’s no need to panic; they’re actively managing the situation.
The health department has set up rapid response teams to check on affected areas. They’ve sent stool and blood samples to the National Institute of Virology, where they’ve found Campylobacter jejuni and norovirus in some cases. Water samples are also being tested, and they’re waiting for those results.
Authorities are keeping everyone updated to ensure transparency. They’re encouraging residents to stay cautious but calm as they work hard to control the spread of GBS.
