The ASI is sprucing up Pune’s iconic sites, Shaniwarwada and Aga Khan Palace, to celebrate their rich history and beauty
Pune: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is on a mission to beautify two of Pune’s historical treasures, Shaniwarwada and Aga Khan Palace. They’re focusing on making these sites cleaner and more visually appealing.
At Shaniwarwada, they’re planting vibrant flowers like marigolds, which are reminiscent of those in the gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan. They’re also giving the old trees a fresh coat of paint and using special treatments to protect the ancient wall paintings of Sheshashayi Vishnu and Lord Ganesha.
Over at the Aga Khan Palace in Kalyani Nagar, the gardens are getting a makeover too. They’re adding lush green lawns and colorful plants. Plus, they’re fixing water supply issues to keep everything looking great. The ASI is keeping a close eye on both places to ensure they stay well-maintained.
The Aga Khan Palace is especially significant as it was a detention center for Mahatma Gandhi during the British rule from 1942 to 1944. He was there with Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary, Mahadev Desai. In 1969, Prince Aga Khan dedicated the palace to the nation to honor Gandhi’s centenary. Thanks to these beautification efforts, the palace gardens now shine with renewed beauty, reflecting their rich history.
