Pune is seeing a spike in suspected GBS cases, but health officials assure the public to stay calm and informed.
Out of the 59 cases, 39 are men and 20 are women. Right now, 12 patients are on ventilators in different hospitals around the city. It’s a mixed bag, with some cases coming from private hospitals too.
The public health department noted that most of the suspected cases are from Pune rural areas, with a few from the city and nearby Pimpri-Chinchwad. They’re even treating a few patients from neighboring districts.
Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar mentioned that the Rapid Response Team is already in the affected areas. They’re collecting samples for testing and checking the water quality too. Plus, they’re running awareness campaigns to keep everyone informed.
Private doctors have been told to report any suspected GBS cases right away. Dr. Kamlapurkar reassured everyone that there’s no need to panic; the health department is ready with preventive measures.
The Prime Minister’s Office has also checked in on the situation, and local officials are keeping them updated on the steps being taken.
Dr. Nina Borade from the PMC noted that many patients had eaten outside food or drank contaminated water before getting sick. They initially had stomach issues, but then developed sudden weakness, a key sign of GBS.
To tackle this, 17 teams are out there monitoring the situation in affected areas. They’re ramping up surveillance to ensure everyone stays safe.
GBS is a serious but treatable condition where the immune system attacks the nerves, causing weakness and other symptoms. It’s crucial to stay informed and follow health guidelines during this time.
