A 56-year-old woman from Sinhagad Road has died from suspected GBS, with 16 new cases reported in Pune, raising health concerns.
The first case was a 40-year-old man from Solapur who died back in January. He had severe gastrointestinal issues before returning home. The woman started feeling weak and tingly in her limbs on January 15. She first went to a private hospital but was later admitted to SGH on January 17. Unfortunately, she passed away on January 28.
Hospital officials say she suffered from respiratory failure and quadriplegia, with GBS being the main cause. Dr. Nina Borade from the Pune Municipal Corporation confirmed the case is being treated as a suspected GBS death. The woman had traveled to Gorhe Budruk and was a cancer survivor, having had surgery five years ago.
On the same day, health authorities reported 16 new suspected GBS cases in Pune. Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar mentioned that 72 cases have been confirmed as GBS. The majority of these cases are from areas along Sinhagad Road, like Kirkatwadi and Nanded City.
Health officials are still trying to figure out the cause of the water contamination linked to these cases. A team from the Central Health Ministry is investigating, and water samples are being tested for contamination. They’ve also sent stool samples to check for viruses, with some testing positive for Norovirus and Campylobacter.
In total, 127 patients are currently being treated for suspected and confirmed GBS in various hospitals across Pune. It’s a concerning situation, and everyone is hoping for answers soon.
