Activists in Pune are gearing up for a Chipko March to protest tree cutting for city projects on February 9th
Pune: Recently, the Pune Municipal Corporation decided to plant over 5,000 new trees. This is to make up for the trees cut down for road widening and flyover work. They’ve planted these new trees in six spots around the area, and they’re keeping track of them with GPS.
Back in October, the Bombay High Court stepped in and put a stop to any more tree cutting along Ganeshkhind Road. They found that the PMC didn’t follow the rules properly. They had allowed the cutting of 192 trees without really listening to public concerns. This led to a legal challenge from a group of activists.
One activist shared a powerful message about a banyan tree that was marked for cutting. They pointed out that this tree does so much more than just stand there. It cleans the air, provides shade, and is home to various wildlife. Cutting it down means losing a piece of life, not just a tree.
