PUNE: Arogya Mitras, the folks who help patients access health services under the MJPJAY and PMJAY schemes, are gearing up for an indefinite strike starting February 12, 2025. They’re frustrated over long-standing issues that haven’t been addressed.

The Arogya Mitra Employees Union, part of the Centre of Trade Unions, officially announced the strike on January 20, 2025. They’ve given the government 21 days to respond to their demands, or else they’ll walk out.

These Arogya Mitras play a crucial role in the health insurance scheme that’s been around since 2012, helping people get treatment at numerous hospitals across Maharashtra. Over 1,600 of them, including 104 from Pune, are expected to join the strike.

Their main demands include a salary increase from the current ₹11,400 to ₹12,000 to a minimum of ₹26,000, along with benefits like special allowances and annual raises. They also want better job security and legal leave options.

Dr. D L Karad, who’s leading the protest, mentioned that they previously held a one-day strike in August 2024, hoping for a resolution. They were promised that their issues would be sorted out, but nothing has happened since then.

Despite reaching out to the new health minister, Prakash Abitkar, for a meeting to discuss their concerns, they received no response. So, they feel they have no choice but to strike.

Annasaheb Chavan, the CEO of the MJPJAY and PMJAY schemes, acknowledged the strike notice and said he’s new to the role. He promised to look into the situation and take necessary actions.
