Pune: Recently, there’s been a bit of a stir over the Riverfront Development (RFD) Project. An activist named Sarang Yadvadkar raised some serious concerns about the environmental clearance it received. He filed an application pointing out that the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) didn’t seem to follow environmental laws properly.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) took notice of these concerns and directed several government bodies to respond by February 21. They’ve set a hearing for February 22 to discuss this further. The RFD project is a big deal for Pune, and it was even kicked off by Prime Minister Modi back in March 2022.

Yadvadkar claims that the information provided by the project’s proponents was misleading. He mentioned that the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) didn’t actually conduct any studies on the project, despite what was claimed. He also pointed out that the project didn’t consider important reports about climate change and flooding risks.

Given the gravity of these issues, the NGT has asked six different authorities, including the union government and local municipal corporations, to provide their responses. It’s a crucial moment for the project and the community, and everyone is waiting to see how this unfolds.
