Pune is set to launch a new COP-24 patrolling system by mid-February, aiming to boost police response times and improve public safety.
The idea is to have police on the move 24/7, which should help cut down on crime. The police department is excited about this change, as it will allow for quicker responses to emergencies. Right now, it takes about seven minutes for police to respond to calls made to the 112 helpline. With COP-24, they hope to bring that down to under five minutes.
The new system will be managed centrally, meaning better coordination among officers. They’ll be using technology and real-time data to keep an eye on high-crime areas. This should make a big difference in how quickly they can react to incidents.
Amitesh Kumar, the police commissioner, mentioned that the current beat marshals will be replaced with motorcycle and van patrols. These vehicles will be stationed at key locations throughout the city. They’ve got 39 mobile vans and 125 motorcycles ready to go, with a good number dedicated to responding to emergency calls.
Training for the new system is already underway, and the goal is to have a more efficient response mechanism. Unlike the old system, which could pull back patrols during VIP movements, COP-24 will ensure that patrols are consistent unless there’s a major emergency.
The police will also be using crime data to decide where and when to send patrols. This means they can focus on areas that need it most. Each police station will have a dedicated CR van, monitored by GPS, to ensure they’re always ready to respond. It’s an exciting time for Pune as they work towards a safer community.
