Pune’s latest crime report reveals a drop in murders but an increase in cheating and crimes against women, with plans for 2025 ahead.
But it’s not all good news. Cheating cases have skyrocketed, jumping from 1,108 last year to a whopping 2,021 in 2024. This includes a lot of cybercrimes and economic offenses. Plus, rape cases increased to 505, up from 410, and molestation cases also rose to 864 from 775. Commissioner Kumar mentioned that the rise in these cases is partly due to better reporting and support for women, like the toll-free helpline and WhatsApp complaints number.
On the bright side, the police managed to keep things under control during big events like the Lok Sabha elections and Ganeshotsav, with no major violence reported. Looking ahead, Commissioner Kumar laid out some ambitious goals for 2025. They want to cut murder cases to under 75, boost women’s safety, and tackle street crimes. They’re also planning to enhance their tech capabilities and improve traffic management with more CCTV cameras around the city.
The police are taking a tough stance on repeat offenders, especially those with multiple criminal cases. They’ve been working hard on high-profile cases from this year, ensuring strong charges are filed. Traffic-wise, they’ve identified 367 congested spots and are making improvements in key areas. So, while there are challenges, it seems like the Pune Police are on the right track to make the city safer.
