PCMC is testing a new school zone design in Nigdi to boost student safety and make their commutes more enjoyable
The plan includes some cool changes like wider sidewalks and raised crossings to help kids cross the street safely. They’re also adding a dedicated cycle track to keep cyclists safe. The idea is to slow down drivers to below 20 km/h, making the area much safer for everyone.
PCMC’s commissioner, Shekhar Singh, emphasized that student safety is their top priority. He mentioned that these changes will not only help reduce speeds but also ensure that everyone—students, teachers, and parents—can move around safely. This trial is just the beginning of a bigger plan to redesign school zones in the area.
Jashwanth Tej K, a program manager, pointed out how important it is to make the journey to school safer and more enjoyable for kids. By improving their walking and cycling experience, they’re not just keeping them safe but also helping them develop important skills.
To make sure the new design meets the needs of the students, PCMC and GDCI talked to them about their daily challenges. They found out that crossing the street and dealing with parking issues were big concerns. After gathering feedback from students and parents, they’re moving forward with these changes.
Once the trial is over, PCMC and GDCI will check how well the new design worked. They’ll look at things like how fast cars were going and how safe the kids felt. Based on this feedback, they’ll decide on the next steps to make these improvements permanent.
