Pune Municipal Corporation is on high alert after 24 suspected GBS cases emerged, prompting a thorough investigation.
So, what’s GBS? It’s a condition where the immune system goes a bit haywire and starts attacking the nerves. It can lead to some pretty serious symptoms like weakness and tingling in the limbs, and in some cases, it can even cause paralysis. The exact cause is still a bit of a mystery, but it often follows a viral or bacterial infection.
Dr. Nina Borade, the health chief at PMC, mentioned that they’re doing door-to-door visits to check on people. They’ve sent samples from eight suspected patients to the National Institute of Virology for testing, along with water samples. They’re trying to figure out if there’s a common cause behind these cases.
Interestingly, they haven’t found any suspected cases during their surveys so far. The patients are being treated in various private hospitals around the city, with ages ranging from two to 61. Most of them are from Pune Rural, and only one has traveled to Karnataka recently.
Dr. Vaishali Jadhav, another health official, shared that they’re keeping a close eye on areas like Bajirao Road and Shivteerth Nagar. They’ve got teams out there checking homes and gathering information, but so far, no new suspected cases have turned up. The surveillance will continue for a few more days as they try to get to the bottom of this situation.
