The NGT has ordered immediate measures for forest conservation in Mohammedwadi after a citizen’s complaint raised serious concerns
The heavy rains during monsoon have caused significant soil displacement, leading to mud buildup and less groundwater recharge. The complainant urged the authorities to step up conservation efforts under the “Paani Adva Paani Jirva” scheme.
The forest department admitted that the boundary wall on the hill slope was damaged by rainwater, worsening the soil erosion problem. They are currently working on repairs. Plus, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests has put together a budget proposal for soil and water conservation for the next fiscal year.
During a recent hearing, the NGT expressed frustration over the lack of transparency from the forest officials. They instructed the department to finish all conservation work before the next monsoon and to address the citizen’s concerns thoroughly.
Interestingly, no one from the Pune District Magistrate’s office showed up for the hearing, which the NGT pointed out as a governance failure.
Social worker Jaymala Dhankikar shared her thoughts, saying that the NGT’s decision is a crucial step toward restoring the forests. She hopes the Forest Department will follow through on the tribunal’s orders for a sustainable future.
Overall, the NGT’s ruling has sparked hope among locals for real action to protect the Mohammedwadi forest area. Now, everyone is watching to see if the authorities will finally deliver on their promises.
