BJ Medical College is set to build a 250-bed super specialty hospital in Pune, aiming to enhance healthcare services for local patients.
Every day, SGH sees about 2,500 to 3,000 patients. They perform around 500 procedures, both minor and major. The proposal for this new hospital was sent to the medical education department recently.
The hospital will be built on a large 31 lakh square feet area, rising 16 stories high. BJMC prefers to have it on the SGH campus, which makes sense for everyone involved.
Dr. Eknath Pawar, the dean, mentioned that the hospital will include departments like urology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and neurology. Each of these will have 20 to 30 beds.
Currently, departments like neurosurgery and pediatric surgery are already busy. They have around 20 to 30 beds each. Once the new hospital opens, they plan to double the bed capacity.
Funding for this project will likely come from both the central and state governments. Starting the facility on the SGH campus is a priority.
BJMC and SGH already have a combined capacity of 1,293 beds, which has recently expanded to 1,700. SGH also has 140 ICU beds across various departments.
Patients come not just from Pune but also from nearby districts like Solapur and Satara. This influx often leads to a shortage of beds, especially in the ICU.
Dr. Jadhav, the medical superintendent, noted that the current bed shortage affects patient care. This new hospital will greatly help those in need.
