Activists in Pune are sounding the alarm over new flood data, pushing for urgent government action to protect public safety
The report reveals that the current flood lines in Pune are outdated and inadequate. The new flood levels are much higher than what was previously recorded. Activists like Sarang Yadwadkar have been vocal about this issue, even challenging the city’s flood lines in court.
Yadwadkar has reached out to local officials, urging them to prioritize public safety. He insists that they need to remove encroachments and stop dumping debris in the riverbed right away. The MERI’s findings are alarming, showing that the flood values for the Mutha and Mula rivers have increased significantly.
For instance, the flood value for the Mutha River has jumped from 60,000 cusecs to over 107,000 cusecs. The Mula River’s flood value has also risen sharply. This new data takes into account additional water from city drainage channels, which was overlooked in earlier assessments.
The activists are pushing hard for the government to take these findings seriously. They believe that without immediate action, the safety of the community could be at risk. It’s a critical moment for Pune, and the call for change is louder than ever.
