MPCB Head Urges PMC to Create Timely Action Plan for Sewage Treatment Plants

PUNE: The chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Siddhesh Kadam, is on a mission. He’s asking the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to whip up a time-bound action plan for sewage treatment plants (STPs). With water pollution on the rise, it’s a big deal.

During a recent meeting, Kadam and other officials discussed the pollution challenges facing Pune. They focused on several key issues, including STPs, solid waste management, and air pollution. Kadam emphasized the need for the PMC to treat sewage at its source until the STPs are up and running.

Kadam also mentioned that they’re looking into the pollution caused by commercial complexes near the Khadakwasla dam. They want to ensure that anyone breaking the rules gets penalized. Plus, they’re hoping to get government land for the STP setup to speed things along.

On the air pollution front, Kadam suggested that the PMC check out guidelines from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. They’re considering a ban on new commercial ready-mix plants in Pune, but that decision is still in the air. The PMC is also asking for expert advice on managing air pollution from crematoriums, and the MPCB is ready to help out. It looks like both organizations are gearing up for some serious action to tackle these environmental issues.
