A maternity home in Pune faces serious allegations for using expired Betadine on new mothers, raising concerns about patient safety and care quality.
A social activist named Raju Savle blew the whistle on this. He said they found expired Betadine bottles from last year and even some Covid vaccines that had expired in 2022 and 2023. That’s just not okay when it comes to patient safety.
After the complaints, some concerned citizens and activists went to check things out at the maternity home. The staff there denied using any expired meds, but they weren’t very helpful when asked to show the medicines. However, the group later spotted a biomedical waste van that supposedly had those expired Betadine bottles.
Savle mentioned that on Thursday, the staff tried to hide the expired bottles in cupboards. They even tampered with the labels to cover up the expiry dates. But they had the batch numbers, which matched the disposed bottles. That’s a serious risk to patients’ lives!
Another local, Mangesh Bhalekar, pointed out that the quality of care at the hospital has really dropped. The outpatient numbers have plummeted from about 300-350 patients a day to just 100. People are worried that this kind of negligence could seriously harm new mothers and kids. They’re calling for strict action against the staff and better healthcare services.
Shekhar Singh, the municipal commissioner, said he’d look into the matter and ensure an inquiry is conducted. If the staff is found guilty, appropriate action will be taken.
Officials also warned that using expired Betadine could lead to skin infections since it might not work properly anymore. That’s just another reason why this whole situation is so concerning.
