A leopard injured in an accident attacked forest officials during a rescue, but was later captured and taken to Pune for treatment
The leopard had been hurt in a road accident on the Pune-Bengaluru Highway. After dragging itself into some bushes, the officials got the call to help. Nivritti Chavan, a range forest officer, led the team, and they teamed up with the RESQ Charitable Trust from Pune.
When they got to the scene, they searched for the leopard but couldn’t find it until later. Unfortunately, while they were looking, the leopard suddenly attacked Chavan. He fell into a pit while trying to escape, and that’s when the leopard went after the other officials too. In total, six of them got hurt, with one even getting bitten.
After the chaos, the RESQ team managed to capture the leopard later that evening. They took it to their treatment center in Bavdhan. Dr. Kalyani Thakur, a wildlife vet, said the leopard is a young male with some serious injuries, including fractures and signs of internal bleeding. They’re keeping a close eye on it and might need to do surgery if it stabilizes.
