The much-awaited metro corridor connecting Pune’s IT hub to the city centre is expected to operationalise by March 2026, with multiple new routes planned under future expansion.

Pune’s traffic scenario could see a major shift in 2026, with the inauguration of the long-awaited Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro route. The 23-km corridor will connect the bustling IT hub of Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar, easing congestion on one of the busiest stretches of the city. Officials say land acquisition, approvals and key construction milestones indicate the project is progressing toward its tentative completion timeline.

The route, being developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is expected to provide direct connectivity for thousands of IT employees and daily commuters who currently depend on private vehicles and buses. Once operational, the metro line aims to significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic bottlenecks along the Hinjewadi–Wakad–Baner–University Road corridor.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also directed authorities to maintain project timelines and ensure Metro Line-3 work proceeds as scheduled. The instructions reflect renewed emphasis on expediting metro connectivity and infrastructure upgrades in the Pune Metropolitan Region.

The 23.3km-long elevated metro route is being keenly awaited as it will connect the city with Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjewadi, which has been witnessing traffic congestion for the past few years. The metro Line 3 will be connected to the already operational Line 1 and Line 2 through a skywalk at Civil Court station.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility that all stations on Line 3 might not be inaugurated at the same time owing to pending works.

The Line 3 metro route is likely to get a good response from those working in the IT sector based in Hinjewadi. Line 3 is also expected to push up the footfall at the presently operational Line 1 (Swargate to PCMC) and Line 2 (Vanaz to Ramwadi) routes.

Work to pick up on route extensions

Alongside the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar stretch, the Pune Metro planning team is expected to prepare detailed project reports for several proposed new routes. Possible future metro corridors include Wakad to Katraj (via the Mumbai–Bengaluru Bypass), Wakad to Chakan, Kharadi to Pune Airport, Shivajinagar to Kondhwa, and Hadapsar to areas like Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road railway station. These proposals are part of a broader expansion strategy to connect suburbs, IT zones, and industrial clusters more comprehensively.

Metro connectivity to Hinjewadi is seen as a crucial upgrade for Pune’s urban transit network. With lakhs of IT employees using the route daily, the new corridor could reduce pressure on road networks and cut commute times significantly. The service will also complement the existing Purple and Aqua metro lines operating in the core city areas.

Officials are optimistic that despite logistical challenges and earlier delays, the line will be ready around 2026. Metro expansion is viewed as key to solving Pune’s longstanding traffic congestion problem and supporting future growth of IT hubs and residential zones.

If completed on time, the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar line will not only benefit corporate commuters but also students and residents commuting between the city centre and the western suburbs.
