From Tankers to Taps: Water Security Achieved
One of the most visible changes since the late 2010s has been the improvement in water supply. A decade ago, long queues of water tankers outside housing societies were common. By 2025, this has largely become a thing of the past. The expansion of Pune Municipal Corporation water pipelines across Balewadi has ensured more reliable and equitable distribution, significantly improving daily life for residents.
A Magnet for Professionals and Families
Balewadi’s population profile has also evolved. With IT parks in Hinjawadi and Baner within easy reach, the area has attracted professionals from across India. Entrepreneurs, business owners and senior executives are increasingly choosing Balewadi for its low-density bungalow layouts, larger housing societies and better road widths compared to older parts of the city. This cosmopolitan mix has driven demand for quality civic amenities, schools and healthcare.
Safety, Planning and Controlled Development
Unlike many rapidly expanding localities, Balewadi has largely avoided the problem of rampant illegal construction. Planned development, wider internal roads and closer monitoring have helped keep crime levels relatively low. According to local civic officials, this has contributed to a stronger sense of safety and order in the neighbourhood.
What Has Improved, What Still Needs Work
While significant progress has been made, Balwadkar is candid about the challenges that remain. Education and healthcare continue to be priority areas. School capacity has increased since 2019, but the demand for affordable, high-quality English-medium education remains strong. On the healthcare front, private hospitals have come up around Balewadi and Baner, yet affordable public healthcare is still limited, putting pressure on nearby facilities.
Electricity reliability has improved with coordination between civic authorities and power distribution agencies, though peak-load issues persist in some pockets. Cleanliness and waste management, especially in newly developed zones, remain works in progress.
Infrastructure Push and the Next Phase
Over the past few years, substantial funding has been directed towards strengthening Balewadi’s core infrastructure. Road widening, new drainage lines and junction improvements have eased congestion and reduced monsoon-related issues. Public spaces and neighbourhood parks have also increased, improving liveability.
Looking ahead, the focus is on integrating Balewadi more seamlessly with Pune’s larger transport network. Metro connectivity, better bus links and last-mile transport solutions are expected to further boost accessibility and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
A Locality Still on the Rise
As of 2025, only a portion of Balewadi’s total surveyed land has been fully developed, leaving room for planned expansion. With steady civic investment and controlled growth, Balewadi is no longer just an upcoming suburb but an established urban destination with clear potential for the next decade.
“Balewadi is still evolving,” Balwadkar says. “The goal is to ensure that growth remains balanced, inclusive and sustainable, so that residents don’t just live here, but enjoy a better quality of life.”
