Winter storms set to continue hammering parts of Quebec

It’s gearing up to be another messy day on the roads in parts of  Quebec as storm fronts continue to pound the area.

A winter storm Monday brought freezing rain, blowing snow and strong winds across Eastern Canada that, at one point, left thousands without power in Quebec.

Environment Canada says some areas northeast of Quebec City and into northern New Brunswick could see between 15 and 40 centimetres of snow along with high winds.

“A winter storm warning is issued when multiple types of winter hazards (such as snow, freezing rain, wind and rain) are expected or occur,” explains Environment Canada.

Much of Canada has been blasted with a number of weather systems over the last week, ranging from blizzards and cold snaps to freezing rain.

The weather has caused flight delays and cancellations at airports in Montreal.

Meanwhile, a strengthening bomb cyclone is barreling its way across the northern United States, unleashing severe winter weather in the Midwest and aiming at the East Coast.

Weather ahead for Montreal

A blast of winter weather is keeping temperatures well below seasonal norms as the region heads toward the end of the year. Today will remain mainly cloudy, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries and strong west winds gusting up to 70 km/h. Temperatures are holding near minus –10 celusis, but the wind chill will make it feel closer to minus –21 C. Similar conditions are expected tonight, with flurries possible and overnight lows near minus –12 C.

Wednesday will bring a mix of sun and cloud, slightly calmer winds, and a high of minus –9 C, though wind chills near minus –20 C will persist. New Year’s Day is shaping up to be bright but cold, with sunny skies and a high of minus –13 C, followed by a clear and frigid night dropping to minus –21 C.

The remainder of the week offers a mix of sunshine and periodic flurries. Friday and into the weekend will see on-and-off chances of light snow, while daytime highs stay between minus –13 C and minus –15 C. Sunshine returns Sunday, but cold nighttime temperatures and the chance of flurries remain part of the extended forecast.
