Montreal police (SPVM) have arrested two suspects in connection with separate attempted arson incidents targeting businesses in the past 24 hours.
The SPVM says a 19-year-old woman was arrested around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday after officers spotted her loitering near a licensed establishment on Brunswick Street in Dollard-des-Ormeaux while carrying a can of gasoline. She was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
In a separate case, police also arrested a 15-year-old boy suspected of being directly involved in arranging arson attacks against Montreal merchants. A search led to the seizure of evidence, and the teen was conditionally released while the investigation continues. Police say additional arrests and charges are being considered.
The SPVM says it is stepping up efforts to raise awareness among parents and caregivers about the risks of young people being recruited online for criminal activities. Officers are urging adults to stay informed about the platforms and groups used by youth.
Police are also calling on business owners who receive threats not to comply and to report them immediately. Anyone with information related to arson attempts is asked to contact police or Info-Crime Montréal, which allows anonymous tips and may offer rewards.
