Two people are in life-threatening condition after being pulled from a house fire in Scarborough Tuesday morning, according to Toronto Fire Services.
The fire happened in a single family home just after 5:30 a.m. in the area of Sheppard Avenue East and Washburn Way.
Fire crews arrived to see flames and smoke billowing out of the second floor of the home, Toronto fire chief Jim Jessop said at a news conference Tuesday morning after the fire was put out.
Crews fought through flames to rescue two residents on the second floor who were taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, he said.
“We are wishing them all the best right now, especially this time of year,” Jessop told reporters.
He said investigators believe the victims were the only two people in the home at the time.
“We’ve conducted both our primary and secondary searches,” Jessop said. He said police are connecting with the victims’ family members and arranging for them to visit the hospital.
The fire caused significant damage to the home, particularly to the second floor. Fire crews will remain on the scene to monitor the site, Jessop said.
Some furniture and objects from the home are scattered on the lawn near the home. Jessop said they were removed by fire services during overhaul to reduce the risk of the fire reigniting.
