Pune–Satara Highway Revamp Completed: Service Roads Upgraded, Two-Wheelers And Light Vehicles Get Separate Routes

What has changed?Implemented in collaboration with MD Infra, the project included resurfacing the main highway and widening service roads at several locations. According to NHAI, the Pune–Satara Highway has nearly 120 km of service roads, of which around 40 km have been widened. These service roads have been expanded to a width of 10.5 metres, effectively increasing them from two lanes to three lanes in many stretches.

With the service roads now being three-laned, local traffic and two-wheelers are being routed away from the main highway. This segregation of traffic has reduced congestion and eased vehicular load on the main road, helping address long-standing traffic bottlenecks.

NHAI Pune said the focus was on tackling frequent traffic jams and accident-prone spots along the highway. With the renovation of the main road and the addition of a third lane on service roads, a safer and more efficient traffic system has been created for both light and heavy vehicles. Increased road width directly contributes to fewer accidents and ensures a smoother travel experience.

Two-wheeler traffic divertedFollowing the widening, two-wheelers and smaller vehicles are now largely using the service roads. This has resulted in a noticeable reduction in traffic congestion and accidents on the main highway. Morning and evening traffic has been moving more smoothly, offering major relief to daily commuters on the Pune–Satara route.

Meanwhile, NHAI has also approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed new expressway between Pune and Mumbai. Once completed, the new route is expected to substantially reduce congestion on the existing Mumbai–Pune Expressway and cut travel time to nearly 90 minutes.
