Pune: Doctor Couple Seeks Divorce Within 24 Hours of Marriage, Shocking Reason Emerges

Court grants mutual consent divorce in eight days, highlighting the cost of missed conversations before marriage

A newly married doctor couple from Pune shocked many after their marriage ended within just 24 hours, following a serious disagreement over the husband’s work commitments. Despite being in a relationship for over 18 months before tying the knot, the couple realised immediately after marriage that they were incompatible, leading to one of the quickest divorces recently recorded by the Pune family court.

According to details available, the husband works in a senior position in the merchant navy and spends long periods at sea, often remaining away from home for months at a stretch. The wife, a practising doctor, reportedly became aware of the extent of his professional travel only after the wedding. This disclosure triggered an intense disagreement between the two on the very first night of their marriage.

By the next day, the couple mutually decided to live separately. No allegations of domestic violence, harassment, or criminal wrongdoing were made by either party. Instead, both agreed that the differences were fundamental and unlikely to be resolved through reconciliation.

The couple formally approached the Pune family court on December 3 through their lawyer, Advocate Rani Kamble-Sonawane, seeking divorce by mutual consent. Under normal circumstances, Indian law mandates a six-month cooling-off period before granting divorce. However, Supreme Court guidelines allow courts to waive this period if the couple has been living separately for more than 18 months and there is no possibility of reconciliation.

In this case, the couple had already been living apart since the day after their wedding and had been separated for nearly a year and a half by the time the matter reached court. Additionally, the husband was required to travel abroad urgently for professional reasons, which further influenced the court’s decision.

Taking these factors into account, Pune family court judge B. D. Kadam waived the mandatory waiting period and granted the divorce within just eight days, finalising the separation on December 10.

During the period of separation, family members from both sides reportedly attempted to counsel the couple and encourage them to reconsider. However, the differences remained unresolved, and both parties reiterated their decision to end the marriage amicably.

Legal experts involved in the case stated that the process was handled peacefully, within the framework of the law, and with mutual understanding from both sides.

The case has sparked wider discussion about modern marriages, particularly among highly educated and professionally driven couples. Observers note that while love marriages are often assumed to come with deeper understanding, this incident underscores the importance of clear and honest communication about careers, expectations, and lifestyle choices before marriage.

As divorce rates continue to rise in urban centres like Pune, the case is being seen as a reminder that compatibility, transparency, and dialogue are crucial foundations for any lasting relationship.
