Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) MNA for Chauveau Sylvain Lévesque announced Saturday morning on his social media that he wouldn’t seek re-election next year.
“I am leaving because I want to do something else. It’s as dumb and simple as that,” wrote Lévesque in a Facebook post.
“I am not angry, I am not leaving for family or health reasons, and I am not affected by the current polls, you know how quickly things can change in politics. I am not specifically opposed to certain decisions, even though I have had differing opinions at times.”
Lévesque said he has trust in the CAQ and its leader, Quebec Premier François Legault, adding that he “owed” his political career to him.
“I would also like to highlight the privilege I had of being one of the first to join the Coalition Avenir Québec adventure and of being able to contribute, alongside him, to the creation of the party in 2011,” Lévesque added .
He was first elected as MNA for the riding of Vanier-Les Rivières in Quebec City during the 2012 general election.
In the following 2014 election, he was defeated by Liberal Patrick Huot.
Lévesque won the general election of 2018, this time as a candidate in the riding of Chauveau and was re-elected as MNA for Chauveau in 2022.
On Nov. 2024, he was reprimanded by the National Assembly for attempting to deceive and obstruct the work of the ethics and professional conduct commissioner, Ariane Mignolet.
The results of the commissioner’s investigation led Lévesque to resign from his position as second vice-president of the National Assembly.
The MNA for Chauveau said he will finish his term.
On Thursday, the CAQ was hit by the resignation of its health minister Christian Dubé after difficult negotiations with the unions representing doctors in Quebec.
The next provincial election must be held by October 2026.
