Pune is set to enhance safety in hilly areas with a new ₹82 crore proposal for CCTV and connectivity improvements
The police have faced challenges due to poor mobile and CCTV coverage. For instance, a gang rape incident in Bopdev Ghat highlighted these issues. The lack of proper facilities made investigations tough.
To tackle this, the police plan to install CCTV cameras, improve internet access, and set up panic buttons and streetlights. Amitesh Kumar, the Pune police commissioner, mentioned they’ve identified 17 key areas for this project.
They’ve proposed a budget of ₹82 crore to the state government for these upgrades. Shailesh Balkawade, an additional commissioner, said they’re planning to install around 250 CCTV cameras and enhance mobile connectivity.
With this new system, the police hope to provide real-time surveillance and respond faster to incidents. Recently, the state government also approved ₹480 crore for installing 2,800 CCTV cameras across Pune, aiming for completion by the end of December 2025.
