Pune Police reveal a drop in serious crimes in 2024, despite an overall rise in reported cases, highlighting a focus on economic offenses.
Interestingly, while the total number of cases has increased, serious crimes like murder and attempted murder have actually gone down. For instance, there were 93 murder cases in 2024, compared to 101 last year.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar noted that the average murder rate has decreased, too. It went from about 8.65 murders a month to 7.16 in 2024.
However, there’s been a spike in cheating cases, with 2,021 reported this year, up from 1,108 in 2023. This rise is attributed to a focus on economic crimes and land scams.
The data also shows a decline in house break-ins and thefts, with 527 cases in 2024, down from 604 last year. Vehicle thefts remained steady, with 1,982 cases reported this year.
Overall, while Pune is seeing more reported crimes, the serious ones are on the decline, which is a positive sign for the community.
