Pune: This year, the Pune city police have made a big move by cancelling 111 firearm licences. It’s the first time they’ve done this since 2019. With all the talk about gun licences lately, especially after some issues in Beed district, it seems they’re really stepping up their game.

During a recent press conference, the police shared that they also sent notices to 200 licence holders. These folks need to explain why they should keep their licences, or they risk losing them. It’s interesting to note that only 65 new licences were issued this year, a sharp drop from 186 last year and 279 the year before.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar mentioned that after February 2024, most licences were given to sportspeople or those inheriting them. If someone was involved in criminal activities, their licence was cancelled. Plus, many didn’t renew their licences, which also led to cancellations.

On another note, the police made it clear that they didn’t issue any NOC recommendations for FL-III licences, which are for selling and transporting foreign liquor. In previous years, they had issued some, but this year, they rejected 82 applications. It looks like they’re tightening the reins on both firearms and liquor licences in Pune.
